5 Signs that Your Windows Need to be Replaced

When it comes to replacing your home’s windows, the notion of cost can sometimes be overwhelming. However, it’s important that homeowners think of it as an investment, and one that will likely save you much more than the initial expense in the end, not to mention making your home feel more comfortable in the process!

If you’re experiencing any of the following, it may be a good time to consider an investment into replacement windows for your home.

1. Drafts Persist When Windows Are Closed

One of the most obvious signs that your windows need to be replaced is when you’re noticing a draft despite your windows being closed. Sometimes it’s easy to find the source of the draft. In cases where it isn’t quite so apparent, try using the lit candle or feather test to determine which windows are drafty and which ones are the most severe. When you factor in the increased energy costs to combat drafts, the extra strain on your HVAC system, and the related frustration and discomfort with hard-to-maintain temperatures within your home, drafts can often end up costing you much more than simply replacing your windows.

2. Sounds From Outside Can Easily Be Heard

Cold air isn’t the only thing that can penetrate bad windows – sounds can also come through. In fact, you may notice sounds before you notice drafts. By replacing your windows with newer, more insulated and energy efficient windows, you will likely notice a significant drop in the level of noise heard through your windows. 

3. Difficulty Opening and Closing Windows

When it comes to windows getting stuck, it’s not just an aggravation; it’s a potential safety issue. Think about it:

• Open windows could suddenly slam shut causing shattered glass to go flying.
• Closed windows may not open when you need them to – fire, smoke, etc.

Besides the aggravation, windows that don’t open/close easily usually mean the window is not balanced correctly. This means water, air, dust and other particles can enter the home more easily. By replacing windows that won’t open and close as they should, you’ll not only have a more powerful barrier to keep unwanted intrusions, you’ll also be increasing the safety of your home. 

4. Condensation Between the Glass

Windows that have condensation, streaking, or marks between the glass is a sign that your insulated glass has seal failure.  That means that the sealant between the panes of glass has been compromised, and outside air is able to enter between the glass.  This not only looks unsightly and is impossible to clean, but it could also mean your windows aren’t insulating your home the way you thought they were.  If the windows in question had previously been replaced with more “energy efficient” options that include argon gas between the glass, then seal failure would allow the argon gas has escaped from between the glass, leaving you with a less efficient window than when you first purchased it. 

5. Sky-High Energy Bills

There is of course one sign that serves as a reminder every single month, and that is seeing your monthly energy bills continue to be substantially higher than they should be, and often continuing to trend upward. If you want to reverse this trend, a major step is to make sure your home’s windows are in good, working condition.
